Ternopil is a city in western Ukraine, located on the banks of the Seret River. It is one of the major cities of Western Ukraine and the historical region of Galicia. Although most of Ternopil is new, the 16th century Nativity and 18th century Dominican churches survived. It is the centre of a region famous for its castles, waterfalls, caverns and rivers. In spite of the devastating effects of two world wars the city is proud of its historical significance within the region. The city lake, pictured above, was created in 1951 and is one of only two European cities that has such a unique feature in the city centre.
